Trégastel’s marine aquarium: coastal life, beneath the rocks
In Trégastel, the marine aquarium isn’t housed in an ordinary building: its tanks are set beneath a jumble of pink granite boulders, around fifty metres from Coz-Pors beach. It’s an ideal outing with children, and the best option when it rains.
What you’ll see
The aquarium showcases coastal wildlife, the creatures you brush past without noticing while swimming or rock-pooling: lobsters, sea bass, pollack, conger eels, rays, dogfish, abalone and seahorses. The visit is laid out across several areas and also explains how the tides affect marine life.
It’s the perfect follow-up to a morning of rock-pooling: children get to see, on a bigger scale, the creatures they spotted in the pools.
A surprising history
The cavities beneath the rocks have had many lives before becoming an aquarium in 1967: according to the aquarium, they have served as a chapel, a dwelling, a munitions store and a prehistory museum. The aquarium was renovated in 2006.
